Adventure
Quest Guide
General: This
Adventure Quest Guide is
about the Online Single Player Flash
RPG Game Adventure Quest(AQ) which
are updated on an ongoing basis by Artix Entertainment who started
developing the game in 2002.
DISCLAIMER: This
Adventure Quest Guide
contains
information that can be considered as spoiling in nature. Answers how
to solve certain things can be found within. If you are specifically looking for this kind of information you can check out the Adventure Quest Hints.
The Plot: The
world that the game takes place in is called Lore and
is the home for
the Atrix own created game
genre ranging from MechQuest to Dragon Fable (which
are other games
like adventure quest)
that are set 5000 to 5 years back in AQ's history.
This
review is based
upon my own experiences with
playing the game and high quality information from online
sources
(the largest informational contribution is from wikipedia). I
have re-formatted these pieces together for a better fit.
The
primary focus in AQ is to
fight monsters
in a turn based fighting system. As with any rpg game you can arm your
character with a multitude of weapons (magical or regular ones),
armors, spells, potions etc. Purchase pets that fights for your side
and when you slay monsters you gain Experience points (XP) and off
course the precious gold that we all like.
The
XP
allows you to
gain levels which grants you more Mana, Health and other attribute
points. Gold is used to purchase Items, potions, weapons, armors, train
with the various trainors and pretty much anything that is for sale!
There is a lot of information covered within the Adventure Quest Guide
that I have gathered so make yourself comfy and lets
get cracking.
The Combat System:
As
I wrote above the development team designed this game around
the battle
with monsters as such you will see plenty of action. Here is an insight
into how the combat system is set up.
When you
arrive in combat
the monsters attribute points are compared with your own and the
initiating attack goes to the one with the advantage. (Luck is the
dominating attribute in determining this)
On the
enemy side is
the monster(s) and yes they can be more than one and on your side is
you, your pet(if you have one) and a guest/companion (which can be
acquired through quests etc).
As with some games
equipping or
changing weapons, shields, armor etc does not usually take a round but
there are weapons and items that DO TAKE A ROUND so pay attention. Some
Monsters can also call for reinfocements which does not deplete the
round for them.
The
outcome of the battle is
influenced
significantly depending on the difference in attributes between the
player and the monster also including the "defense modifiers" for the
various elements ( eight in total). Contrary to many rpg games a HIGHER
defense modifer indicates an attack with that elemental damage does
MORE Damage. Paying attention to the various Elements are also cruical.
The Elementes are covered further along in the Adventure Quest Guide.
You
also have Defense modifiers
for
Melee, Ranged and Magic (which are the three methods of attack that you
can make).
When
it has been determined who attacks first you can use a "regular" attack
or a magic attack. Magic attacks cost Mana Points (MP) and regular
attacks can depending on the weapon include special attacks such as a
water cascade or lightning depending on the weapons attributes.
Battle
commences until either you or the monster has 0 HP at which point the
battle is over. Once over if you are the victor you get XP, and/or Gold
and somethimes Z-Tokens which can be used to purchase special items.
If
you die you don't loose anything and gets returned to the town by the
Grim Reaper (I didn't know he could be that nice) but your death is
saved in the Game Database (and obviously not here in the
Adventure Quest Guide).
Skill Points: Skill
Points are a rather new addition (at the time of writing) is indicated
by a Green Bar which is simlar to the Mana Points bar and with the
skill points you can use Class Armour Abilities.
When
you create your character for the first time you recieve 50 SP's and
you gain 5 points per level after that.
When
you have just logged into the game you start with 0 SP and as each turn
in battle passes you gain SP until the bar is filled.
A
Key
feature that Skill Points allow you is the ability to flee from combat.
This is of major importance since some monsters suffer from lycanthropy
and it isn't nice if your mage gets turned into a werewolf and has to
fight with fists instead of spells. If you don't have any SP's you
simply cannot flee.
The cost for fleeing is
dependant on the Monsters Level (higher level, higher cost.
Oh
and if you die, your SP's are reset to zero so it might be a good idea
to learn when to stay and fight and when not to!
Elements:
        As
I mentioned at the top of this Adventure Quest Guide there are 8
primary elements (Earth, Wind, Water,
Energy, Fire, Ice, Light and Darkness) in addition there are some
hidden
elements (Void for instance which on wikipedia apparently is confirmed
by Atrix Staff).
The elements have one opposite or
"weak" element which allows for more effective attacks if used properly.
To
attack efficiently Use:
- Water to attack Energy
- Energy
to attack Water
- Earth to attack Wind
- Wind
to attack Earth
- Light to attack Darkness
- Darkness
to attack Light
- Fire to attack Ice
- Ice
to attack Fire
Paying
attention to which element that the monsters originate from will decide
the outcome of many battles for you. If you attack them with their
primary element you might even end up healing them! Also pay attention
to that monsters might originate from more than one element so choose
wisely so that you do a max amount of damage. Certain weapons also give
damage from multiple elemental sources.
Pets and Guests / Companions: In
your struggle against the monsters you will find yourself with
purchased pets, and sometimes you get aid from Guests or other
Companions that will accompany you through your struggles. Some pets
heals you others fight for you and as with monsters and the elements
it's important to pay attention to from which element your pet attack
comes from so your pet doesn't heal the monster by mistake. You have
can choose to send your pet away (temporarily) during combat.

Pets
do not attack each round (which is a darn shame) and more powerful pets
costs more gold.
Guests / companions on the other
hand is obtained during quests or summoned by spells.
- The
primary attribute that affects how many times a Guest or pet attacks is
Charisma
Demon Wolf
Attributes: There
are six attributes that applies in combat that is covered in this
Adventure Quest Guide:
- Strength
(STR) increases random damage of melee and ranged attacks as well as
the accuracy of melee attacks.
- Dexterity
(DEX) increases the random damage of ranged attacks, the accuracy of
all types of attacks and the ability to block attacks.
- Intellect
(INT) increases the random damage of magic attacks, the accuracy of
magic attacks, and the characters maximum MP.
- Endurance
(END) increases the characters maximum HP.
- Charisma
(CHA) increases the damage and atack frequence of pets and guests.
- Luck
(LUK) increases a characters chance of starting the battle, finding a
treasure chest, dodging monster attacks and affects accuracy for all
attack types slightly increases the chance to block an attack. The
affect is smaller than the other attributes.
You
can un-train
attribute points if you want to re-train (re-distribute) them by doing
a quest called "Deaths domain" and loosing to an aptly named Sir
Pwnsalot. You will loose the money that it took to train those
attribute points. Once you have found Sir Pwnsalot Guardians and
X-Guardians have free access in the Guardian Tower by teleporting to
the "Un-Trainer"
Personal Reflections: If
you have played any RPG game before you will recognise the character
system easily. You have all the standard attributes and they work
similarly as they always have done.
It
takes some
time getting into the combat system but once you have gotten the hang
of it is really a rather streamlined process. Don't be to fast with
buying your first pet you can choose a companion for free at first and
then you can mix some ingredients in the magic shop to create a stone
that helps you in combat. Next it's time to check out the Class system
that I covered in page two of the Adventure Quest Guide.
